There are more
than eight million Huis live in China, mainly in the Ningxia Hui
Autonomous Region.
At the beginning of the 13th century, a great number of Muslims
from Central Asia began to migrate to China. They assimilated with
local Hans, Uygurs and Mongolians, forming the Hui nationality.
These people speak, read and write the Han language, though some
Hui words are still used among the Huis themselves. They are followers
of islam and strictly abide by the islamic customs.
In
Ningxia, there are more than 1,800 mosques where people go to pray
and attend religious festivals. The most important festival is the
Corban that falls on the tenth day of the 12th month in the Muslim
Calendar.
