The new Shanghai Museum opened to the Public at the end of 1995, with a floor space of 120,000 square meters and a collection of 123,000 pieces of relics. It consists of 12 sections, one library with 200000 volumes on history and fine arts, and 380 seminar rooms. The 12 sections are devoted respectively to
--Bronze ware featuring long inscriptions and writings.
--Chinaware displaying porcelain pieces representative of various periods dating back as far as 8800 years ago.
--Sculptures, mainly stone carvings, as well as well as gold and bronze statues of Buddha.
--Coin collections featuring coins made through the centuries of all kinds of materials: copper, iron, gold, and paper.
--Furniture, predominantly Ming (1368-1644) and Qing (1644-1911) styles
--Jade, particularly jade carvings up to the Han Dynasty (206 BC-220AD)
--Arts and crafts from china's ethic minorities.
--Donations from Hu Huichun, about 100 pieces of chinaware.
--Western art, which is still in the process of soliciting collets.
