Covering an area of 10,496 square kilometres and with a population of 2.18 million, Sanmenxia is a newly industrialized city with the establishment of the first water project, Sanmenxia Dam on The Yellow River in 1957. It is located in the place, where the three provinces, Henan , Shanxi and Shaanxi joint.

Sanmenxia is one of the original places of Chinese nationality. There are many places of historical interest, such as God Huang Tomb, Yangshao Cottage Ruins, Hangu Ancient Pass, Taichu Palace, Baolun Pagoda and the Steady Rock in the Middle of the Yellow River. And several Chinese historical idioms come from here. For instance, the absence of lips makes the teeth cold; capturing the Yu State rather than dying out the Guo State and the lucky cloud comes from the east and etc.
