The Xuanwu Lake
Xuanwu Lake was originally known as Houhu Lake. in 424, "black dragon"(crocodiles) appeared in the lake and the name was changed to Xuanwu, which means black. Also, according to Taoism, the four directions were given different names, with Green Dragon for east, White Tiger for south, Red Peacock for west and Black Dragon for north. The lake is located north of Nanjing, hence the name.

With an area of 444 hectares, Xuanwu Lake is naturally formed with spring waters from the northern side of the Purple Hills. It joins the Yangtze River through Xiaguan.

There are five islets on the lake-the Circular islet, the Cherry islet, the Liang islet, the Green islet and the Water Chestnut islet. There are two rocks on the Circular islet look like the Goddess of Mercy and belong to Lord Xu Da of the Ming Dynasty. They are slim, crystal-clear, perforated, wrinkled and grotesque looking.
