The construction of Baiyunguan (White Cloud) Taoist Temple started in 739 A.D. during the Tang Dynasty. It is the biggest Taoist structure in the city of Beijing. Baiyunguan covers an area of over 40,000 square meters. Its structure embodies the system of Taoist temples of the Qing Dynasty. The whole temple is divided into four parts: the middle, east and west parts and the backyard. The overall layout is strict and magnificent. The Qiu Zu Hall is the most scared place of the Quanzhen Sect and the founding temple of Longmen Sect of Taoism. Emperor Xuanzong of the Tang Dynasty built this temple to show his piety for Taoism and to worship Lao Zi, the founder of Taoism. The white-marble statue of Lao Zi in the hall is a relic left from the Tang Dynasty and a rare Taoist work of art. In the hall there is a painting "Qiu Chang Chun Accepted the invitation in Snow Mountain" done in the period of Emperor Guangxu of the Qing Dynasty. It is also an art treasure. Laolutang Hall is the main site for holding religious services in Baiyunguan. On the left of the structure grows a 1,000-year-old elm with diameter of nearly one meter. In the main hall of Laolutang Hall seven immortals of the Quanzhen Sect of Taoism are worshipped. They were all disciples of Wang Chongyang. In the middle is Qiu Chuji, the founder of the Longmen Sect. | |||
